Excellent。 I liked this, mostly because it seems well written。 The police and place are alien to me and my country so I cannot judge it’s verisimilitude, but thought this book’s urgency and sincerity were worthwhile。
Valerie,
I hadn’t really heard anything about this book, I liked the description so I thought I would try it。 It is a slow-moving story but interesting。 It moves just fast enough to keep me interested。 In the end I enjoyed the read。RECOMMENDATION: MAYBE
Craig,
Good first effort, but the ending seems abrupt and a bit unsatisfyingI enjoyed this book, but I felt like the story ended too abruptly and I was a bit unsatisfied as a result。 The storyline took an abrupt turn and ended abruptly with many questions left unanswered。 I know that there is another book in the series。 Perhaps this second installment will fill in the blanks, because I feel like the story ended in the middle。

Racism。 Fear。 Violence。 Lies and corruption。 It’s all part of the culture of the Los Angeles Police Department in Aaron Philip Clark’s Under Color of Law。 And, a young Black police officer is caught up in it。Trevor Finnegan has had some bad days。 There was the day he lost his mother to cancer。 There was the day his close friendship with Sarada Rao was shattered by violence, a day that changes his career path from artist to avenger。 But, when, against his father’s wishes, he enters the LAPD acade Racism。 Fear。 Violence。 Lies and corruption。 It’s all part of the culture of the Los Angeles Police Department in Aaron Philip Clark’s Under Color of Law。 And, a young Black police officer is caught up in it。Trevor Finnegan has had some bad days。 There was the day he lost his mother to cancer。 There was the day his close friendship with Sarada Rao was shattered by violence, a day that changes his career path from artist to avenger。 But, when, against his father’s wishes, he enters the LAPD academy and joins the police force, nothing prepares him to watch two senior officers brutally attack and beat a young Black suspect。 Finn knows if he wasn’t a cop, if his father hadn’t been a cop, that victim could be him。 It makes him more determined than ever to move up in the police department so he can do something about police violence。 He’s so naive。Four years later, Detective Trevor Finnegan isn’t quite so naive。 In fact, he’s built a wall around himself and his emotions。 No one can reach him。 He’s angry at his retired father who now protests against police violence。 He knows he’s hated and distrusted by many for his rapid move to detective。 He knows he’s compromised his principles to get there, but he still believes he might be able to make a difference。 Then, he’s handed a case that he knows is trouble。 Trevor’s special assignment is to investigate the murder of Brandon Soledad, a police recruit attending the academy, found naked on a hiking trail。 He knows it’s a lie when his superiors tell him it’s a “career maker”。 Politically, in the department, it could mean the end of his career。Aaron Philip Clark’s brutal novel should trouble every reader。 It reinforces so many of the stories we’ve seen in newspapers and the news in the last couple years。 Although it’s set in 2010 and 2014, the stories of police violence against unarmed Black men could have been in the headlines of newspapers in 2020 and 2021。 It illustrates the corruption and racism with the police force, showing the officers who align themselves with white supremacist groups。 Yes, there are honest cops in the books, but they’re few and far between。 And, for much of the book, Trevor Finnegan isn’t one of them。How far can one man be pushed? At what point does it become too much to lie and cover up actions of fellow officers, and even yourself? The deadly, dramatic events in Under Color of Law should make all of us uncomfortable。 Clark’s novel, inspired by his time as an LAPD recruit, is a frightening, tragic story。 。。。more

My thoughtsI like the character development。 I like how the author connects past events to current behavior, and I like the unexpected twists and turns!

Great detective story/mystery。 This was a surprise! Well written, believable characters, taut plot line, fast paced and an uncomfortable topic in today's world, all handled adeptly by Aaron Clark。 I'll be reading more about Trevor Finnegan。 Great detective story/mystery。 This was a surprise! Well paced police storyI enjoyed the writing and that made this book a good read despite a couple of plot holes。 Overall I would recommend it and will look for more from the same author。

This is a really good story about a man who wanted to do the right thing but ended up making a mess of things。 If you like cop stories, try this one。 You won’t be disappointed。

This book was a total surprise to me as I didn't expect much for some reason。 It was the best crime book I have read in many years。 Having had law enforcement officers in my background, I was able to empathize with the lead character and found his perspective on being a black officer in a mostly white police department to be totally believable but not unfairly slanted。 Tje plot kept me on the edge of my seat。 This book was a total surprise to me as I didn't expect much for some reason。 It was the best crime book I have read in many years。 Having had law enforcement officers in my background, I was able to empathize with the lead character and found his perspective on being a black officer in a mostly white police department to be totally believable but not unfairly slanted。 Tje plot kept me on the edge of my seat。 。。。more

Good story! This is a good, well constructed "cop book" made that much better by the fact that it is written with a black LosAngeles detective。 It doesn't shy away from that cities problems or those of it's police force。 Well written characters and an interesting plot move the story along st a good pace to a believable conclusion。 I would love to see another book ( o two or three) with Trevor Finnegan。 HE is a great character and I'd be happy to read more about him。 Good story! This is a good, well constructed "cop book" made that much better by the fact that it is written with a black LosAngeles detective。 It doesn't shy away from that cities problems or those of it's police force。 Well written characters and an interesting plot move the story along st a good pace to a believable conclusion。 I would love to see another book ( o two or three) with Trevor Finnegan。 HE is a great character and I'd be happy to read more about him。 。。。more

Alan Zabel,
Better than expected! I settled in for what I thought might be a pretty ordinary police procedural。 But that is not what I got。 Early in the book, I thought that there were a number of distracting detours from the progress of the case。 But actually what was happening was the building up of the main character。 By the end of book, the lead character was strikingly real to me。 His development, while related to, ended up being more important (to me) than the actual progress on the case。
Kathy Drinning,
Awesome bookIt took a while for me to decide if I wanted to read this book。 Honestly, I was afraid that it would be very anti-white, racist propaganda。 Surprisingly, it is thoughtful, truthful and non-prejudiced。 And the love story between Sarada and Trevor is beautiful。 Two lost souls who find each other in the midst of ugliness。 I would recommend this book to everyone。 It is, in my opinion, a masterpiece。

Very tough work- policingWell written and good character development。 Sometimes difficult to follow narrative and recall character names and how they interact。 Is the LAPD really this bad?

Injustice and painThis novel was heart breaking。 The endurance of good people fighting fairly within a broken system。 The raw and unflinching look into law enforcement officers was gritty and gripping!

Under Color of Law (Trevor Finnegan Book1)This is a very good story about a young man of color picked to investigate a young mans murder and finds more than he is looking for
Debra Hill,
I enjoyed this book。 What interested me most about the book was the interaction of the people。 As a black man working within a police department, and just life generally, the book really brought this perceptive home。 He is a rookie cop torn by an ethical dilemma。 This is what made the book so good。 Some of the characters could have been more developed。 However, it was a good read with interesting themes that are timely。 I recommend this book。 #goodreadsgiveaway。

Under Color of Law by Aaron Philip Clark is a chilling and riveting account of the plight of black recruits and officers, so reminiscent of recent protests against the police department。 This is an inside story of what goes behind the scene, an eye-opener about how some officers are brutal enough to indulge in violent means to eliminate those they don’t like。 This fictional story smacks of stark realism, often brushed aside in connection with the high-handedness of cops。Trevor joins LAPD (Los An Under Color of Law by Aaron Philip Clark is a chilling and riveting account of the plight of black recruits and officers, so reminiscent of recent protests against the police department。 This is an inside story of what goes behind the scene, an eye-opener about how some officers are brutal enough to indulge in violent means to eliminate those they don’t like。 This fictional story smacks of stark realism, often brushed aside in connection with the high-handedness of cops。Trevor joins LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department) with dreams of becoming a top-ranking officer and doesn’t give an ear to his father’s warnings that the system is rotten。 He is ready to take all the pressure and has to lock horns with the corrupt and selfish persons around him。 Does he succeed? Could he get justice for Brandon whose body has been found with no clues? Clark’s power-packed style of writing keeps you turning the pages and my heart sank with each development。 I could feel the pain, the frustration, the yearning and the hope of Trevor who refuses to give up。Clark’s characters are believable, crafted with incisive detail as if he has met them。 Trevor’s confidence, determination and resilience shines through out the story。 Joey Garcia and Boston Walsh have been handled brilliantly but it is Trevor’s relationship with Sarada that adds a touch of tenderness to the story。 The book remains inconclusive but I could understand that the issues that have been raised can’t be resolved in a day and it would take years to see the change of attitudes。 I would eagerly look forward to the next book in the series。 Highly recommended! 。。。more
